Natura 2000

A new determining element for nature protection in Šumava is the implementation of the Natura 2000 network. The Czech Republic, as a new member state of the European Union since 2003, is obliged to comply with its legally-binding documents.

Natura 2000 is a system of protected areas of European importance with the most valuable natural localities and most significant plant and animal species. Two important directives relate to environmental protection. These are the Council Directive No. 92/43/EEC of May 21, 1992, on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora, and Council Directive No. 79/409/EEC of April 2, 1979, on the conservation of wild birds. According to these directives, EU member states nominate Natura 2000 sites, with the aim of protecting the environment and enabling plant and animal species - which have already disappeared from many parts of Europe - to survive.
