Šumava SPA Bird Area

The SPA was established by Government Decree No. 681/2004 Coll., to protect the following bird species: capercaillie, black grouse, hazel hen, black stork, corncrake, pygmy owl, Tengmalm’s owl, black woodpecker and three-toed woodpecker. According to the Law on Nature and Landscape Protection, a Bird Area is defined as a special category of protected area with the purpose of maintaining population numbers of the named bird species and the condition of their habitat. As well as these priority species, the occurrence of another 20 Species of Community Interest has been recorded in Šumava, including honey buzzard, peregrine falcon, eagle owl, kingfisher, and others.
